Case Study

Overview

The K4 shaft within Sibanye-Stillwater's Marikana complex was approved for development in early 2021 at a sanctioned capital expenditure of R4 billion. As part of the Owner's Team, R&R provided project controls, contracts management and quantity surveying support.

The Brief

The Challenge

K4 extends Marikana's operating life to around 2070, well beyond the complex's other vertical shafts, most of which are expected to reach end of life within the next 20 years. Delivering the redevelopment within its sanctioned budget and schedule was therefore critical to the operation's long-term sustainability.
